The prevention of corrosion and scaling in a complete cooling water program is a dual process. First, the most effective water treatment chemicals need to be determined.
Second, the chemical must be properly applied to the system. A treatment program may be perfectly matched to the water and operating conditions, but improperly applied chemical
feed will manifest itself in poor program results.
Maintaining clean heat transfer surfaces and ultimately the success of a water treatment program depends upon matching treatment dosage to cooling water conditions and loads.
To facilitate this, a wide variety of chemical feed equipment is available. This equipment may include pumps, tanks, timers, water meters, flow control valves, and controllers for conductivity
and pH. These components can be incorporated into feed systems that automatically maintain preset treatment and system concentrations.
Chemical feed systems for cooling towers and closed-loops cooling systems will vary. The automated system of choice will depend upon system size, operational characteristics
and control requirements, as well as economics. Basic feed control system components may include:

Types of Feed and Control Systems
The various components of chemical feed and control systems can be incorporated into five basic cooling water treatment systems:
Manual or Slug feed
Programmable chemical feed
Conductivity controlled feed and bleed
Water meter initiated proportional feed and conductivity controlled bleed
These methods represent some of the most commonly used systems for treating cooling water. Each system has certain advantages and disadvantages. Each has an application under certain types
of operating conditions. The more complex the chemical feed and control systems are, the more costly they are in terms of components required.
To assist you in matching the most effective control system to your specific system requirements, each system will be described along with its application, advantages, and disadvantages.
When updating your equipment, a few considerations should be made. All of these considerations should be researched to determine what is best for you.
Price - This is put at the top of the list as it is one of the most important factors, but continue on, and price will probably move down on your list.
What options would help me maintain more consistent programs - Biocide Feed options, Flow switches, Water Meter Read-outs? Given today's technology, remote access through your computer and the controller, may provide the best scenario of cost, results and documentation.
Programmability - This is usually handled by your FTS Representative, but sometimes minor adjustments are made by plant personnel (i.e. calibration and Inhibitor Feed Timer Adjustment).
Dependability - You get what you pay for! Some models are more reliable than others.
Recording - With emphasis on legionella and biocide applications, record-keeping is becoming more and more important. Does your unit have the capability to supply a log of your system's operation?
The adjustability of the pump. Some pumps have limited adjustment. Some pumps have only speed or stroke adjustment. Or others (i.e. 1 to 6, while other pumps have 1 to 100 speed stroke adjustments).
Pressure ratings. Your pump must have a discharge rating above your system's operating pressure.
Pump Output. Make sure your pump meets your needs. With a 30 GPD pump, your setting may be 10/10. If you had a 7 GPD pump, your setting would be 20/22 to yield the same feedrate. Try to get your pump to operate in the middle or upper end of its operating range.
Should be easily cleaned.
If system collects a good deal of debris, perhaps a motorized Ball Valve would best suit your needs.

Amount of maintenance on probes.
Location of installation sometimes determines what type of equipment you will use (i.e. some Towers have no usable wet taps, and a drop-in probe may need to be used).
As you evaluate replacing your control equipment, you can readily see that there are many considerations!
Cooling treatment feed and control systems will vary widely in price, depending upon the amount of control desired. However, even the most expensive system represents a small price to pay
to assure corrosion protection and absence of scaling in expensive capital equipment, such as compressors, chillers, condensers, and cooling towers.
The more automated the control system, the less labor intensive it is. While automation has a higher initial cost, it will soon pay for itself in terms of saved direct labor costs. It also
frees operating personnel to perform other tasks.
