Each cooling system is unique. It has water, equipment, operators and operating characteristics that differentiate it from any other system. FTS offers many different treatment programs to suit the individuality of each customer's application.



The MOST for Your Money

Featured among the many FTS programs is its Molybdate Organic Sequestering Technology (MOST) program. This approach gives your systems the MOST protection against scale and corrosion. MOST combines high performance copolymers, scale and iron sequestrants and dispersants with specific corrosion inhibitors.



Stay on TOP of Environmental Compliance

FTS also features its Totally Organic Polymer Sequestering (TOPS) program for those plants which require no heavy metal discharge. This approach provides your system the TOPS in performance and environmental compliance. The TOPS program utilizes 3rd generation organic inhibitor technology with high performance copolymers, scale and iron sequestrants and dispersants. All FTS products are available as single or multi-drum formulations.
The FTS MOST and TOPS programs are at the leading edge of cooling inhibitor technology. They have been time tested and proven in hundreds of accounts. One may be just the approach you need to get the MOST economical performance form your cooling system while using products which are TOPS in cooling treatment technology. Perhaps a combination of the two technologies is best suited for your application. FTS has combined the advantages of MOST and TOPS products into the FTS MOST PLUS line. MOST PLUS products combine the excellent corrosion inhibition properties of Molybdates with advanced 3rd generation polymers and sequestrants to provide superior scale and corrosion control. Additionally, FTS products are available in both liquid and solid states.

Equipment For Cooling Tower Systems

The prevention of corrosion and scaling in a complete cooling water program is a dual process. First, the most effective water treatment chemicals need to be determined. Second, the chemical must be properly applied to the system. A treatment program may be perfectly matched to the water and operating conditions, but improperly applied chemical feed will manifest itself in poor program results.

Maintaining clean heat transfer surfaces and ultimately the success of a water treatment program depends upon matching treatment dosage to cooling water conditions and loads. To facilitate this, a wide variety of chemical feed equipment is available. This equipment may include pumps, tanks, timers, water meters, flow control valves, and controllers for conductivity and pH. These components can be incorporated into feed systems that automatically maintain preset treatment and system concentrations.

Chemical feed systems for cooling towers and closed-loops cooling systems will vary. The automated system of choice will depend upon system size, operational characteristics and control requirements, as well as economics. Basic feed control system components may include:

The various components of chemical feed and control systems can be incorporated into five basic cooling water treatment systems:

These methods represent some of the most commonly used systems for treating cooling water. Each system has certain advantages and disadvantages. Each has an application under certain types of operating conditions. The more complex the chemical feed and control systems are, the more costly they are in terms of components required.

To assist you in matching the most effective control system to your specific system requirements, each system will be described along with its application, advantages, and disadvantages.

What Pieces of Cooling Tower Feed and Control Equipment are Best for Me?

When updating your equipment, a few considerations should be made. All of these considerations should be researched to determine what is best for you.

Price - This is put at the top of the list as it is one of the most important factors, but continue on, and price will probably move down on your list.

Controllers

  1. What options would help me maintain more consistent programs - Biocide Feed options, Flow switches, Water Meter Read-outs? Given today's technology, remote access through your computer and the controller, may provide the best scenario of cost, results and documentation.
  2. Programmability - This is usually handled by your FTS Representative, but sometimes minor adjustments are made by plant personnel (i.e. calibration and Inhibitor Feed Timer Adjustment).
  3. Dependability - You get what you pay for! Some models are more reliable than others.
  4. Recording - With emphasis on legionella and biocide applications, record-keeping is becoming more and more important. Does your unit have the capability to supply a log of your system's operation?


Pumps

  1. The adjustability of the pump. Some pumps have limited adjustment. Some pumps have only speed or stroke adjustment. Or others (i.e. 1 to 6, while other pumps have 1 to 100 speed stroke adjustments).
  2. Pressure ratings. Your pump must have a discharge rating above your system's operating pressure.
  3. Pump Output. Make sure your pump meets your needs. With a 30 GPD pump, your setting may be 10/10. If you had a 7 GPD pump, your setting would be 20/22 to yield the same feedrate. Try to get your pump to operate in the middle or upper end of its operating range.


Bleed Valves

  1. Should be easily cleaned.
  2. If system collects a good deal of debris, perhaps a motorized Ball Valve would best suit your needs.


Blowdown Controllers

  1. Sample Time & Sample Interval Adjustability.
  2. Reliability of Controller.


pH/ORP Controllers

  1. Ease of calibration.
  2. Amount of maintenance on probes.


Installation

  1. Location of installation sometimes determines what type of equipment you will use (i.e. some Towers have no usable wet taps, and a drop-in probe may need to be used).


As you evaluate replacing your control equipment, you can readily see that there are many considerations!



Cost Justification

Cooling treatment feed and control systems will vary widely in price, depending upon the amount of control desired. However, even the most expensive system represents a small price to pay to assure corrosion protection and absence of scaling in expensive capital equipment, such as compressors, chillers, condensers, and cooling towers.

The more automated the control system, the less labor intensive it is. While automation has a higher initial cost, it will soon pay for itself in terms of saved direct labor costs. It also frees operating personnel to perform other tasks.
